Secondary glazing is an internal frame and pane fitted inside your existing window reveal: a second layer of glass that sits behind your original window without changing the outside appearance of your property.

Noise reduction

Well-specified and correctly fitted secondary glazing can reduce perceived noise significantly. The wider the air gap between panes, the greater the acoustic benefit. Because the secondary pane sits inside your existing window, you get a larger cavity than most double glazing allows. In the right circumstances, that can cut noise levels by up to 80%.

Heat retention and draught control

Most heat loss through older windows comes from draughts rather than the glass itself. Secondary glazing seals the reveal and creates an insulating air gap, which tackles both. For properties where full window replacement isn’t possible, it’s a well-tested alternative. Heat loss can be reduced by up to 65% in the right conditions.

Security

Secondary glazing adds a second physical barrier. Our frames are aluminium with a timber subframe, fixed securely into the reveal. The glass can be specified to toughened or laminated where additional strength or safety is a priority.

Common questions about secondary glazing

Is secondary glazing worth it compared to double glazing?

For most properties with standard windows that aren’t in a conservation area, double glazing is the obvious route. But listed buildings and conservation area properties are a different matter. Replacing original windows often isn’t permitted, and secondary glazing is one of the few options available.

For older homes where you wish to retain your existing sash or timber windows, secondary glazing is a well-established solution that delivers real improvements to warmth, noise reduction and draughts.

Can you fit secondary glazing in listed buildings and conservation areas?

Yes. Secondary glazing doesn’t alter the original window or the external appearance of your property, which is why planning and conservation officers generally accept it where double glazing would be refused.

If you’re unsure about your property’s status, your local council’s planning department can confirm.

How long does it take from first contact to installation?

We aim to carry out a survey as soon as practically possible after your initial enquiry. Once measurements are taken and the order is placed, manufacturing typically takes 6–8 weeks. Fitting time can vary due to quantities and sizes of your secondary glazing units, other factors include location, larger properties or trickier access. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote.

Will secondary glazing stop condensation?

It can help. By raising the temperature of the inner surface of your original window, it makes moisture less likely to settle there. Condensation has several causes though, ventilation being one of the main ones, and secondary glazing won’t fix it on its own in every case. We’ll be honest with you about what to expect for your specific situation.

Do I need toughened or laminated glass?

Not always. Building regulations specify where safety glass is required: typically, low-level panels and large glazed areas near floor level. If your installation falls into any of these categories, we can specify it accordingly. For most secondary glazing in standard window positions, standard glass is fine.

Can I still open my original windows for ventilation and cleaning?

Yes. The secondary unit opens independently of your original window. Sliding, hinged and lift-out configurations all give easy access. If ventilation or cleaning access is a priority, mention it when you enquire and we’ll make sure the right type is specified.
